Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea. The cornea forms the anterior bet eyeball , it looks like a transparent window , showing the color of the iris behind .
Its rounded shape is more like a football than a rugby ball.
Keratoconus is a corneal disease characterized by corneal thinning that may or may not lead to irregular astigmatism and a subsequent decrease in visual acuity. It usually begins at puberty and progresses to mid 30s during which growth slows down and stops souvent.La reported prevalence varies significantly from 8.8 to 54.4 per 100 000, and both sexes are equally affected.
Keratoconus can occur in one eye first, but generally affects both eyes, with one eye being more severely affected than the other. Visual loss occurs primarily from irregular astigmatism and myopia and secondarily from corneal scarring . Ultimately about 12-20 % of people may require a corneal transplant , at a relatively young age.
The main goal of treatment of keratoconus has changed in recent years, from a treatment focused primarily on improving visual acuity in a range of new methods focus on prevention of disease progression .
TREATMENT
1 . Glasses are prescribed and brought as visual acuity is sufficient for daily patient activity.
2 . Rigid lenses are prescribed when the glasses do not allow good vision.
3 . If it is found that keratoconus evolves from one year to another, it offers CROSS LINKING : This is a treatment that stiffens the cornea so that it does not continue to deform and thin.
4 . At an advanced stage of keratoconus is used for intra- corneal rings . They allow the cornea to restore its rounded , as close as possible to normal. They are very well tolerated by the corneal tissue for life. Sometimes it remains myopia , requiring glasses , or the use of excimer laser LASIK kind .
